Born from an inventive idea to recreate the nostalgic charm of classic Japanese folk toys using centuries-old lantern craft, "mame cocolan" is a palm-sized lantern that brings an instant smile to your face. Long celebrated for handcrafting Yame-chochin lanterns rooted in Buddhist traditions, Shiraki Kogei blends time-honored techniques with a touch of playful Japanese humor—delivering warmth, character, and practical ambient illumination.
Each lantern is individually shaped and assembled by artisans in Yame, Fukuoka Prefecture—the heart of Kyushu's paper lantern heritage. The delicate shade is wrapped in local Hidaka Japanese washi paper, beautifully diffusing light over a solid Kyushu beech wood base. Compact and cordless, it serves as both an endearing decorative accent and a portable ambient light.
